CHARACTER INFORMATION
Common Knowledge: Jeradley is holdbred, from Southern Hold, originally, and comes from a family of drudges. He's widely regarded as selfish and ambitious. Some people are fine with these qualities (he isn't the only one at the Weyr with this way of thinking, after all), or find that his intelligence and resourcefulness are more important qualities to judge him by, while others consider him to be not entirely trustworthy and best avoided. He's greasy as a snake-oil salesman -- but better-looking than that stereotype, at least.
Character Name: Jeradley
Birthdate (age): 3287.02.19 (19)
Gender: Male
Birthplace: Southern Hold
Current Location: Last Hope Weyr
Family:
Father -Jergan, 45, Southern Hold, drudge
Mother -Leylina, 46, Southern Hold, drudge
Siblings - many, TBD, all at Southern Hold
Physical Description: Jeradley is 5'11" with an average build -- neither broad nor skinny, neither overly-muscular nor fat. He's fit, with a healthy layer of muscle, but nothing more special than that. His hair is black, parted down the center, roughly mid-ear length on the sides and gradually makings its way to shoulder-length in the very back. His eyes are brown, and his skin tone is best described as olive or Mediterranean. He's not drop-dead gorgeous, but most people seem to consider him a fairly good-looking young man.
Personality: Jeradley is out for himself, first and foremost. His parents were never able to impart the same work ethic in him that they've both always shared, and they're unhappy with him for always looking for what they call "the easy way out" -- but in turn, he looks down on them for their lack of ambition and willingness to roll over and do what they're told. He's watched all his family work all their lives and get nowhere, and when his father explains proudly that their family has long been in the service of the Lord and Lady Holder, he doesn't see a proud legacy. He sees turns of futility and no reward whatsoever.
As a result, he's grown into an ambitious, selfish sort of creature. He's bright and eager, always on the lookout for some new opportunity to raise his station -- preferably with as little work as possible, but he's very capable of digging his heels in and putting forth some serious effort if the potential reward is great enough. He's not above stealing if he thinks that's what will help him, or lying outright, if need be. To be honest, his quick mind was utterly wasted as a drudge, but his quick tongue is notoriously disrespectful and quickly becomes unwelcome in most of the places he's been. He honestly thinks he's smarter and knows better than almost everyone, and proving him wrong is a good way to earn a grudge that he'll never let go of. He *can* be quite charming when he wants to be, but he's still learning that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
History: Jeradley is the child of drudges, from a long family line of drudges. Most of his family has no problem with this: they're hard workers, they do their part, and they enjoy being relied on to keep the Hold running smoothly. So people unfamiliar with drudgework do occasionally assume they're half-wits of some sort (they aren't), so what? *They* know better, and that's what's important, right?
Jeradley has never been one to be content, though. Ever since he was a child, he's wanted things he hasn't got. First, he developed a penchant for taking things he wanted, regardless of whether they belonged to him or not. Punishment didn't really teach him to stop -- it just taught him to be more careful about getting caught. Then, as he got older, he was looking for ways to actually get ahead in life. Join a craft? He was smart, but his attitude and tendency to seek shortcuts in his work kept any of the local journeyman and masters from recommending him. Marry a rich girl? He seduced several, but he certainly wasn't considered marriage material by their fathers.
When the earthshake happened, people suffered, but young Jeradley prospered. Suddenly there were tons of things that, with a little care and possibly repair, were ownerless (their owners having died) and ripe for the taking. Then there were shortages, things people were in dire need of and who had no choice but to pay whatever price he asked, to get. It was a goldmine for anyone who was resourceful and without scruples -- both of which were qualities that Jeradley possessed in spades.
Still, there's a limit to what you can buy with shadily-gained marks (particularly when you're the type who would rather selfishly hoarde your marks so that you can never be penniless again, as Jeradley is). There were nice clothes, objects he had never had, and all sorts of other goodies to buy. Status isn't gained so easily, though, at least not in a ruined dead-end Hold where the drudges were getting the short end of the stick, anyway. After a few turns of milking Southern dry and making enemies, he was making preparations to move on and make his own way in the world -- perhaps start as a travelling trader of sorts, now that he was nearly an adult and people would take him seriously? -- when he was Searched. Anti-dragonrider sentiment was strong, and many people would never accept Search, not in a million turns, but Jeradley saw the opportunities it presented, and accepted.
That was two turns ago, and he's been more or less on good behavior. After all, no dragon has picked him yet, and he can't just get himself kicked out before he gets his big chance. He thinks a bronze would be nice, but even just a green has a chance at gaining some real power in this day and age, right?
